Cutie bugs for your little love bug

bumblebees and ladybug
These cutie bugs are so much fun to make!  Once you learn how to twist the ribbon (especially for the butterflies and dragonflies), you can create so many variations that your little love bug will want one to match each outfit.  Not crafty or don't have the time?  Let Nurney's Journeys do the work for you!  Just come up with a color combination and your cutie bug of choice, and we'll make a wonderful gift for your special girl.

Woven Headbands

These woven headbands are so much fun to make, and the combinations are endless!  These are some new ones I made this past spring.  I've had requests for collegiate ones, and wouldn't it be fun to use these for your high school cheer leading squad?  Or maybe with sparkly or iridescent ribbon for a wedding or prom?

I make these using a padded, comfort grip headband (as opposed to the cheap plastic type.)  My daughter, who is very particular about how things feel, loves these and can wear them the whole school day.

Fall and winter colors should be available soon!

Ready for Virginia football!!

Well, it is that time of year again . . . getting ready for football season!  Anyone who knows me is well aware that I am a diehard Wahoo who bleeds blue and orange.  We do, however, have quite a few friends who are Hokies, so I made some Tech bows, too.  I also have to consider my brother-and-sister-in-law, who are living the Virginia "family feud."

I know, I know . . . there are those of you out there questioning how a Cavalier could dare to make Virginia Tech accessories.  I may be a UVA grad, but I'm also a capitalist, and the fact of the matter is, Hokies are much more willing to buy this stuff than my fellow Wahoos.

Hope everyone enjoys, and here's to a hopefully winning season!

Sherri and dragonflies . . .

While I make all kinds of small and medium dragonflies on clippies for young girls, this one was created with a very special purpose in mind.  My friend, Sherri Minor, loved all things dragonfly . . . the real ones, jewelry, art, clothing, anything.  She lost her battle with breast cancer in February of 2010.  Yesterday would have been her birthday, so in her honor, I made a large dragonfly with breast cancer awareness ribbon for wings.  I also attached it to a barrette instead of a clippie . . . Sherri had the thickest, most gorgeous hair you have ever seen.  I'm not sure this will ever be worn, but it makes me smile to look at it and remember my sweet friend.

Our Beginnings . . .

The idea for all of this started eight years ago when our eldest daughter arrived in our lives.  We christened her with the middle name of Nurney, which is a town in Ireland and derived from the Celtic word for "nunnery."  It is also my grandmother's maiden name, my father's middle name, and the last name of the best cousins a girl could wish for.

As our bundle of joy got older, the idea for Nurney's Journeys grew with her.  We've gone through several phases, depending upon what she (and then her brother and sister) needed at the time.  It may sound strange, but we actually started out making homemade organic baby food!  I loved (and still do) creating special meals for my little ones, but as a business, it just did not seem feasible at the time.

We then moved on to customized children's clothing for both girls and boys.  I am very southern, and it was especially difficult to find the conservative style of dress clothes I wanted my son to wear.  The solution?  Sew it yourself!  While we had a lot of fun creations, it was very labor intensive, especially for a mother with a seven-year old, three-and-a-half-year old, and one on the way.

I really enjoyed the sewing and all of the ribbon crafts, and that love brought Nurney's Journeys to where it is today.  I've learned to make any sort of hair accessory that my eldest daughter could desire . . . and as soon as the baby has enough hair, she'll have plenty as well!  When my son sees a ribbon animal he likes, we figure out how to make it and attach it to a pencil, pin, shirt, or hat.  That way, he has his own special touch, too.  With the arrival of our third baby, I've had the perfect excuse to indulge in burp cloths, bib, and onesie creations.

As you can see, we are constantly evolving as the needs of our children change.  And since each child is a unique, special gift, that only seems appropriate.
